“Nottingham Forest are delighted to confirm the signing of Nigerian international forward Taiwo Awoniyi for a club record fee.” Wrote the club on their official website.
The 24 year old becomes Forest’s record signing after putting pen to paper on a five year deal following his breakthrough season in Germany.
The former Liverpool player scored fifteen times in 31 Bundesliga appearances to help his side finish fifth and qualify for the Europa League.
His total of 20 goals in 43 games are both the highest he’s done in a single campaign in his career.
Head coach Steve Cooper expressed his satisfaction at landing the Nigerian international and said he looks forward to the Imperial Soccer Academy graduate becoming a nightmare to Premier League defenders.
“There’s been a lot of interest in Taiwo from other Premier League clubs, and other clubs across Europe, so we’re delighted that he’s chosen Nottingham Forest.
“Our recruitment and coaching teams have been monitoring his progress closely over the last few months. He’s a player who we really believe in and we look forward to him going on to fulfil his potential and become a top Premier League striker with Nottingham Forest.”
Whether Awoniyi will justify his coach’s assertions remain to be seen as the season is due to get underway in the first week of August.
“I’m very excited to be here at Nottingham Forest,” said Awoniyi following his move to The City Ground. “It’s always been my dream to play in the Premier League and having spoken to Steve Cooper about our ambitions and looking at Forest, with its great history, it’s a club that I want to be part of.
Meanwhile…
Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga could be on his way out of the club with interests mounting for the former Athletic Club goaltender.
Kepa was a record signing for Chelsea in 2018 from Spanish club Athletic Bilbao before losing his starting berth to Edouard Mendy.

The 27 year old has now spoken about his future since speculations linking him with a move away started.
“At the end of the day, I’m at a very big club. I will talk to the coach and we will decide, but with the clear message that I want to play more,” he said to Marca.
“Right now I’m a Chelsea player, but what is clear to me is that I want to play more, because I’ve come from a year or two where, when I’ve played, I’ve had great performances.
“For the good performances I’ve had, the feeling is that I want more. I want to play more. I’m at Chelsea and I want to succeed here. And if I can’t, we would look at different things, because my clear objective is to play.”
Asked about the possibility of returning to his former club, he replied: You never know,” Kepa continued. “I have three more years of contract with Chelsea, and in football we don’t even know where we are going to be tomorrow. We’ll see what happens.”
Mendy is Chelsea’s undisputed starter between the sticks and the Senegalese does not look like one who is ready to relinquish that spot anytime.
