The reigning World Cup champions will be competing in Paris this summer, as Spain firmly contained the Netherlands 3-0 on Friday to qualify for their first-ever Olympic games.

More Details

The win came in the semifinals of the Nations League, which also serves as qualifiers for the Olympics and, in the future, the 2027 World Cup.

France won the other semifinal over Germany 2-1, advancing to the final on the 28th.

All is not lost for the Netherlands and Germany – one of whom will still qualify for Paris on Wednesday.

Because France is an automatic qualifier as the Olympic host, the winner of the third-place Nations League match will grab Europe’s third Olympic slot.

Spain looks arguably sharper in 2024 than they did during their World Cup winning run in 2023, following the ouster of embattled coach Jorge Vilda.

In a World Cup quarterfinal rematch with the Dutch, Spain outshot the Netherlands 22 to seven, with Jenni Hermoso, Aitana Bonmati, and Ona Batlle all earned goals.

Spain had already defeated the 2023 World Cup semifinalist Sweden in the Nations League group stage to advance to the knockout rounds.

While other nations are looking for an Olympic bounce-back, Spain could be poised for the first back-to-back international title run in women's soccer history.
