World Champs: Gudaf Tsegay Wins 5000m Gold As Emmanuel Korir Wins 800m

After claiming the 1500m silver earlier this week, she goes on to take gold in the 5000m and continue the Ethiopians’ dominance of the distance races.

She clocked 14:46.29 to win the title ahead of Beatrice Chebet who held on for second in 14:46.75. Dawit Seyaum ensured an Ethiopian 1-3 finish as she crossed the line in 14:47.36 for Bronze.
Tsegay won her first World title, running a tactical race to out-sprint the field in the final bend.

She wins the sixth title for Ethiopia in women’s 500m at World Championship.
Tsegay, the world indoor 1500m champion, said her training over that distance had been beneficial.
“It helps spring on the home stretch,” the gold medal winner said. “I am happy for this result. This win is for all of Ethiopia.
“I was trying to control the race from first place during the run so it was very hard for me. But that was our plan because I felt in shape and my victory confirms it was a good plan.
“I know that Sifan is a great athlete and she is also a 1500m runner so she has the speed. When she came in front, I speeded up even more and won the medal.”
World record-holder Letesenbet Gidey faded down the straight to miss the podium. She finished fourth in the race.

Emmanuel Korir gave Kenya her second gold medal of the world championship after his win at the men’s 800m final.

He stormed to a 1:43.71 to win ahead of a very strong Djamel Sedjati of Algeria who got second with 1:44.14 while Marco Arop of Canada held on for Bronze in 1:44.28.
