Women’s Football: Record Fans Attendance Recorded In German And Brazilian Leagues

Written by Oluwaseun Oyediji

Apart from the double upsets witnessed in the opening games of 2022/2023 Barclays English FA Women’s Super League (WSL) with the defeats of Manchester City and Chelsea, women’s football witnessed another breakthrough last weekend as fans’ attendance hit another level in Germany and Brazil.

More Details

A new record was set for women’s football fans’ attendance in Germany over the weekend.

A total number of 23,200 fans attended Saturday’s Frauen-Bundesliga opener between Eintracht Frankfurt Frauen and FC Bayern Frauen in Frankfurt setting a new DieLiga record.

Unfortunately, the hugely attended game ended in a 0-0 draw as the former league Champions, Bayern Munich were forced to a barren draw in the league opener.

Bayern Munich were the fan favourite to win the league opener with the odds of 1.30 to win the game against Eintracht Frankfurt’s whooping 7.30 odds.

Last season third-placed side (Eintracht Frankfurt) held on for a famous draw after crashing out of the 2022/2023 UEFA Women’s Champions League Qualifiers.

The team defeated Fortuna Hjorring 2-0 before losing 2-1 to Dutch Champions, Ajax.

The Champions League Qualifiers test has indeed prepared Eintracht Frankfurt for the league opener.

Up next for the team is an away game against Freiburg while Bayern Munich attempt to pick its first win of the league season against Werder Bremen on September 29.

Before that league encounter, Bayern Munich will on September 20 visit the Reale Arena, San Sebastian to face Real Sociedad in the first leg of the UEFA Women’s Champions League Qualifiers with the winner of the two-legged game making it to the group stage.

A similar situation of record fans attendance also took place in Brazil last weekend.

A New attendance record was recorded for Brazil women’s club football as 36,330 fans witnessed Internacional 1-1 draw with Corinthians in the first leg of the 2022 Brasileiro Feminino on Sunday.

Millene’s 32nd-minute goal for Internacional was cancelled by Jheniffer’s 58th-minute strike at the Estadio Jose Pinhero Borda, Porto Alegre.

The return leg will take place on September 24, 2022.
