Wolfsburg Edge Arsenal To Book Champions League Final Date With Barcelona

It will be the clash of German and Spanish Champions in the final of the 2022/2023 UEFA Women’s Champions League.

German Champions, Wolfsburg secured a 3-2 win against Arsenal after extra time on Monday at the Emirates Stadium, in London.

The first leg ended in a 2-2 draw in Germany with both sides needing a win to set up a final clash with FC Barcelona.

Stina Blackstenius opened the scoring for Arsenal in the 11th minute as she leveraged on a mistake by a Wolfsburg defender to hit a left-footed shot into the center of the goal.

The German side equalised four minutes before the end of the first half.
Alexandra Popp’s header from a free kick was chested by Jill Roord who volleyed the ball with a left-footed shot into the bottom right corner.

Wolfsburg took the lead in the 58th minute when Popp’s header from the right side of the six-yard box to the bottom right corner from Felicitas Rauch’s assist following a corner kick.

Arsenal equalised in the 75th minute to take the game into extra time.
Jen Beattie’s header from the centre of the box hit the bottom left corner.

Pauline Bremer’s right-footed shot from a close range hit the center of the post to give Wolfsburg the lead and also sealed a place in the final of the 2022/2022 UEFA Women’s Champions League.

Wolfsburg will face Barcelona in the final on June 3, 2023.

The final is a repeat of the 2020 and 2022 semi-finals which had different outcomes.

At the 2020 semi-final, Wolfsburg edged the Catalan side 1-0 to reach the final where it lost to Lyon.

Last season, both sides won their semi-final games, but Barcelona progressed to the final 5-3 on aggregate.
