United by people, divided by colours, the City of Milan is witnessing an intense rivalry as we approach the end of the 2021/22 Italian League Season.
After many years of struggles, both Milan teams seems to be finding their feet recently although one cannot say they’re back where they used to be but the race for the Scudetto between two of Italy’s biggest teams from the same city this year reminds the world of how the Italian league once dominated the headlines across Europe.
With Juventus’ recent struggles, the City of Milan has been the center of attraction with Inter winning the league during the 2020/21 season while the two Milan teams remain in tight contention for the 2021/22 crown.
It didn’t start this way as Napoli looked set to beat everyone to the title very early in the season. AC Milan came up with a good fight at some point, convincing the world they had the credentials to lead the rest of Italy but defending champions Inter Milan pulled off some amazing runs to overthrow their city rivals and since then, its been a battle between the two Milanese giants.
In the last few weeks, Milan returned to the summit but Inter with a game less kept pushing, hoping to leapfrog their neighbors to the top with their outstanding game but the men in blue blew up their chances when they fell 2-1 to Bologna last Wednesday.
To the relief of the fans of Milan, the team has led the table going into the matchday 35 last weekend with two points although they had to work had to beat Fiorentina by a lone goal ensuring the 2 points gap between them and Inter – who also won 2-1 at Udinese – remains.
With three games left to end the season, we’re about to witness one of the best ending to an Italian league season in recent years. Milan with the toughest fixtures of the two, still have to play Hellas Verona, Atalanta and Sassuolo have shown they’ve got what it takes to produce results in tight situations this season, and Inter on the other hand with games against Empoli, Cagliari and Sampdoria have shown they know how to blow away big opportunities like they did against Bologna.
Its been 11 years since Milan last won the league title and the addition of Olivier Giroud has enacted the belief in the squad alongside the presence of the ever vocal Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
Inter although lost key players who helped them to the Scudetto last year as well as its title winning coach, Antonio Conte but they’ve put up a good title defence so far.
Three games left, two points separate the rivals that bid to wear the Italian league crown. The battle continues till 22nd of May and who knows if one of them will give up before then but as it stands, the battle will go down the wire and as for where the pendulum would swing at the end of the season, we keep our fingers crossed.
Will it be Inter Milan or AC Milan, time will tell.
