After 12 rounds of matches in the Italian Serie A for the 2023/24 season, only two teams have shown enough consistency to be considered as title contenders, Inter Milan and Juventus with just two points separating them.

More Details

The two teams will lock horns after the November international break at the Giuseppe Meazza stadium with the match a potential title decider. While they both won their respective matches over the weekend, Inter have looked to be the better side this season, hence Juventus will be playing the role of underdogs and the Bianconeri have been able to solidify their defense in recent games.

To be able to beat Juventus, Inter Milan will need to use pressing tactics to keep the opponent’s counterattack at bay, according to legendary coach, Arrigo Sacchi. He revealed this to Gazzetta dello Sport as the former AC Milan coach gave his thoughts on the tactical keys to the Derby d’Italia after the break.

Inter will know what’s in store for them after the international break. Juventus have not necessarily been an incisive possession side on their march to five straight wins in Serie A. But what the Bianconeri do have is pace. Players like Federico Chiesa and Moise Kean have given Juventus the ability to turn defense into attack in an instant.

Massimiliano Allegri knows how to set his team up to mount very effective counters. Therefore, Inter’s biggest task in the Derb d’Italia is likely to be stemming the effectiveness of that counterattack. Sacchi believes that they can do so. But he expects that they’ll need a brave, and organized approach to do so.

“I expect Juventus to play in the way that is traditionally associated with them,” Sacchi writes. “They’ll focus on defense and the counterattack.” “And I expect Inter to dry and dominate the pitch and their opponent,” the former coach continues. “Inter’s task will be that to avoid the quick Juventus counterattacks,” he further added.

“How? One word: pressing.” “It takes courage to do so, and they need to know how to keep the right distances between the lines.” “But it’s only though pressing that you can win the ball in attacking areas,” he notes. “Cause a big problem for the opposition, counter the counterattack.”

“Simone Inzaghi, who is doing an excellent job, must avoid allowing the Bianconeri too close to Inter’s own area.” Sacchi suggests that “Doubling up will be necessary. And there will need to be a player who goes to help his teammates, I’m thinking Hakan Calhanoglu.” He concluded.

Sacchi has always been critical of Inzaghi’s tactics, asking him to be more adventurous and attacking especially in Europe and against smaller opponents and perhaps, the former Lazio manager will look to adopt this new tactics.

But then, Inter have shown that they can play good football against any type of opponent, offensive or defensive with their loss to Sassuolo and draw to Bologna the only sour spot in their season so far this season.

Meanwhile…

Inter wing-back, Federico Dimarco was personally complimented by rap superstar Jay Z after his stunning goal in the win over Frosinone. The 26-year-old Italian has grown into one of Simone Inzaghi’s most important players in the Nerazzurri following his arrival in 2018.

Dimarco has continued to impress for Inter this season and was the star of the show in their 2-0 win over Frosinone on the weekend after scoring an incredible 61-yard goal. The club are now working on locking him down to a new long-term contract. Dimarco has been represented by Jay Z’s Roc Nation agency for over a year now, joining the group thanks to former teammate Romelu Lukaku.

After his incredible strike against Frosinone, Jay Z personally complimented the Italian full back, impressed by his 61-yard wondergoal. Inter president Steven Zhang also praised him for the memorable moment.
