Senegal Crowned 2023 U-20 AFCON Champions

The Young Ternaga Lions of Senegal rounded up an impressive tournament with a 2-0 win over The Gambia to emerge as 2023 U-20 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) winners on Saturday at the Cairo International Stadium, Egypt.

Both sides were the only sides without defeats heading into the final match with Senegal being the better team in terms of attack.
The two teams played five games without conceding but took just six minutes for The Gambia to concede its first goal of the tournament.
Amidou Diop’s cross was headed into the back of the net by Souleymane Faye.
Senegal took the lead into the halftime break before doubling up in the second half.

In the 56th minute, Faye turned provider for Mamadou Camara to make it 2-0.
The win ensured Senegal’s fourth continental title in football since 2022.
The senior national team clinched the AFCON for the first time last year in Cameroon.
The beach soccer team took the Beach Soccer AFCON title and qualified for the Beach Soccer World Cup.
Recently, the home-based team won the CAF Championship of African Nations (CHAN) in Algeria.

Nigeria in the same group as Senegal finished second in Group A and edged Uganda 1-0 in the quarter-final.
The Gambia ended the Flying Eagles’ journey to win its eighth title after a 1-0 loss in the semi-final.
Ladan Bosso’s side will smile home with a podium finish and a medal ahead of this year’s FIFA U-20 World Cup in Indonesia.
The semi-finalists at the U-20 AFCON automatically qualified for the World Cup.
