The National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) plans to abandon the Challenge Cup as a tournament in 2024, according to The Equalizer.
More Details
The league will instead play a single game before the 2024 regular season between the 2023 Shield winner and NWSL champion.
This year, Racing Louisville will play OL Reign and North Carolina will take on Kansas City in the 2023 Challenge Cup semifinals.
The winners will earn $1 million in prize money to be split among the players.
Meanwhile…
Sophia Smith has taken a commanding lead in the NWSL Golden Boot race, sitting on 11 goals and five assists after scoring in her Portland return on Sunday.

She leads Ashley Hatch and Kerolin, who currently have eight goals in the NWSL regular season.
Also surging in goals scored is Rookie of the Year candidate Messiah Bright, who scored a brace this weekend to extend her tally to six goals.
Kerolin may not get many more chances to reach Smith’s mark, as the North Carolina forward is rumored to be linked to Manchester United
