Pioli: “Mike Told Me There Was Racist Abuse From Behind The Goal”

Written by Dare Solomon

The Rossoneri’s victory over Cagliari away form home was cloud by a very disappointing situation with Mike Maignan and Fikayo Tomori complaining of racism after the game.

More Details

Maignan was closest to the Cagliari end and was celebrating with Tomori after the final whistle when they were allegedly subjected to racist abuse, which sparked a scuffle between players from both teams.

Milan coach Stefano Pioli also confirmed the brawl at the final whistle was sparked by racist abuse towards goalkeeper Mike Maignan from the Cagliari ultras.

“Mike told me it was possible to hear some insults from behind the goal,” Pioli told DAZN as relayed as Reuters. “It’s the first time he reacted like that, so something happened. Tomori also told me the same thing.

“It’s always sad when these things happen, nobody deserves that.”

AC Milan will not let this sly as the club took to their social media express their dissatisfaction claiming “we must fight together.”

“This Serie A match day was dedicated to the stand against racism, but there’s still a long road ahead and we must keep on fighting together,” Milan tweeted after the match.

Meanwhile…

Cagliari striker Joao Pedro said he did not hear any racist abuse and defended the club’s supporters.

In some videos that circulated Saturday night, monkey noises were heard loud and clear towards some Milan players but the captain claimed he heard nothing of such.

“I didn’t hear anything,” he said. “That is a very delicate matter, but I was basically in midfield at the time.

“This is not a pleasant situation to talk about, but I have been here for eight years and I will defend the fans because I did not hear anything.” Pedro said.
