The winter transfer window is now officially over with plenty of deadline day moves going through, as we can see from here, but there are also some that didn’t go through.

More Details

One of such transfer that didn’t go through is Barcelona’s move for Manchester City midfielder, Bernardo Silva, with reports that the move was stopped by Pep Guardiola with few hours left to the closing of the transfer window.

The Portugal international is a long-term target for Barcelona and the Catalan giants have tried on several occasions to sign the player. Their latest offer was a loan deal that contained an obligation to buy Silva in the summer, but City have knocked it back.

This is in contradiction to what Guardiola has said in the past about players that want to leave the club. “When you don’t want to stay and want to leave, you cannot stay,”

“If you force one person to stay when he doesn’t want to stay how can you get the best from him? It’s impossible. I would love to stay all together but at the same time if a player wants to leave then we will find a solution.” Guardiola said in the last summer transfer window to justify the exit of Raheem Sterling, Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko to Chelsea and Arsenal.

Barcelona on their part, haven’t made it a secret on their desire to sign Silva and the player is also said to be keen to move to the Catalan giants. Guardiola himself even appeared to be open to the idea of Silva joining Barcelona after a friendly between the two teams last August.

The Spaniard said: “I’m no one to tell Barca to forget about [signing] Bernardo. We want him to stay with us, but I don’t want anyone who’s not happy.”

“The first thing would be for the clubs to come to an agreement, but there has been no offer for him in these last two years.

“I don’t want him to go, he’s a superlative player and a great person… and there are only seven or eight days left [in the window] and we would have to turn to the transfer market. I want him to stay. That said, it is true Bernardo likes Barcelona a lot.” He further added then.

Silva has played more than 280 games since joining City from Monaco in the summer of 2017. He has helped Guardiola’s side win 11 trophies, including four Premier League titles. There’s the belief that Silva’s move to the Camp Nou is just a matter of when.

Meanwhile…

Before the closing of the transfer market, it looked like French giants, PSG were going to conclude the loan signing of unwanted Chelsea winger, Hakim Ziyech, but in a dramatic twist, the transfer didn’t go through despite all parties agreeing to the deal.

It emerged that Chelsea had provided the wrong documents and the transfer was not completed in time. Reports in France even suggested the Blues filed the incorrect paperwork three times before the deadline passed.

PSG are now expected to launch an appeal to try to get the transfer completed after the deadline. Chelsea, who have finalised a deal for Enzo Fernandez, are yet to comment on the matter. This saga could rumble on for days to come.
