French side, Paris FC progressed to the last stage of the 2023/2024 UEFA Women’s Champions League (UWCL) Qualifiers after a 4-2 win on penalties over former champions, Arsenal FC on Saturday.
Alessia Russo bagged her first two goals in Arsenal colours in style as Jen Beattie scored yet another dramatic equaliser in the dying embers of stoppage time, but it wasn’t enough to secure a result and the Gunners Champions League dreams are over for another year.
The two teams met in the Qualifiers after their third-placed finish at the end of their league campaign which denied them an automatic berth in the group stage.
Two second-half goals from Mathilde Bourdieu gave the French side a two-goal lead in the 56th and 57th minutes respectively.
Alessio Russo who replaced Stina Blackstenius in the second half reduced the deficit for the English side in the 80th minute.
Jennifer Beatties’s goal in the additional minutes of the second half took the game into extra time.
Louise Fleury and Russo scored for both sides in the extra time but they were not separated as the game entered penalties where Paris FC emerged victorious.
The French team is just a win from making it to the group stage of the UWCL.
