Written by Oluwaseun Oyediji
In this week’s lone Challenge Cup game, the Washington Spirit became the first team to score four goals from outside the box in a single game in National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) history.
More Details
With their 4-2 win over the Orlando Pride on Wednesday, the Spirit are now second in the Eastern Division standings.
The Spirit had a rough 2022, finishing second to last in the standings just one year after winning the 2021 NWSL championship.
This year, under new head coach Mark Parsons, the team has suffered just one loss across all competitions so far.
The Spirit rotated heavily on Wednesday, with goals coming from a few unlikely sources.
Meanwhile…
Rookie Lena Silano opened the scoring, and center-back Sam Staab put Washington ahead with a stunning free kick from a distance.

Former injury replacement player Marissa Sheva also got on the scoreboard, while regular starter Ashley Sanchez closed things out with a late strike.
2022 is proving to be a fluke for the Spirit, who look ready to come for every trophy in 2023.
