The 34 year old Argentine who was reduced to tears during his farewell speech moved to Paris to team up with long time friend Neymar Jr. who himself had left Barcelona for state backed PSG back in 2017.

Messi did help the capital club reclaim the Ligue 1 title they lost to Lille in the 2020/2021 season but couldn’t improve their fortunes in Europe as they crashed out in the second round of the UCL at the hands of Messi’s perennial rivals Real Madrid.

Messi did score five times in the Champions League before their ouster but his six goals return in twenty six league appearances is his worst since his debut season with Barcelona back in 2005 when he scored just once in seven appearances.

His fourteen assists would have mouthwatering in some cases but judging by his standards, it was a complete underwhelming season from the seven time Ballon d’Or winner.

However, Nasser Al-Khrlaifi, the president of PSG has come out openly to defend Messi’s first season away from Spain and is optimistic the diminutive Argentine will come good in the coming season.

“There is no doubt that Lionel Messi has won the Ballon d’Or a record seven times, and it was not his best season.

“But after more than 20 years in Barcelona, he discovered a new country, a new city, a new league, a new team. A new culture. As well as his family, and he was injured also by the coronavirus. It was not easy for Messi last season, but next season we will see the best version of Messi ever.” He told Le Parisien.

Messi netted thirty eight times in his final season with Barcelona with thirty of those coming in La Liga.

Brazilian superstar Neymar may have played his last season in the French capital if reports emanating from France are anything to go by.

The 30 year old attacker has been at the club since 2017 when he made a world record move from Barcelona.

Jose Alvarez of El Chiringuito reports that the Brazilian has been offered to Barcelona after being made surplus to requirements.

He has helped the club to the league title in four of the five seasons in France and was just 90 minutes away from European glory when they lost to Bayern Munich by a lone goal in 2020.

Neymar’s 100 goals and 60 assists in 144 games for French giants despite being plagued mostly by injuries is an impressive return for a wide player.
