Melissa Philips Departs English Women’s Championship Leaders

Written by Oluwaseun Oyediji

Championship leaders London City Lionesses have suffered a huge blow only days before a Women’s FA Cup glamour tie against WSL side Tottenham.

More Details

Manager Melissa Phillips has left the club to become assistant coach of the United States (U.S.) National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) side, Angel City FC.

Angel City FC is owned by a group of Hollywood stars including actresses Natalie Portman, Jeniffer Garner, Uzo Aduba, and tennis legends Serena Williams and Billie Jean King.

The Los Angeles (LA-based) club is managed by English club Freya Coombe, who Phillips will assist in the new season.

However, the news comes as a major shock to London City, who are enjoying their most successful season to date and sit top of England’s second tier with 24 points from 11 games.

Phillips, originally from San Francisco, had been in charge since October 2020.

Philips is leaving London City Lionesses at the top of the second-tier English Women’s Championship side with 24 points.

The team is a point ahead of Bristol City and has an outstanding match.

Sunday’s clash with Bristol City slated to take place at the Robins High Performance Centre was postponed due to a frozen pitch.

Patches of the surface of the pitch were confirmed unsafe for play and the game was called off following two inspections.
