Manchester United Accelerate For Andre Onana To Replace De Gea As Mason Greenwood Resumes Training

Written By Onyeka Daniel

With each passing day, it’s looking like Manchester United could be inching towards Inter Milan goalkeeper, Andre Onana with the future of Spanish goalkeeper, David De Gea definitely away from the club.

More Details

According to Italian transfer expert, Fabrizio Romano, ‘André Onana’s agent Albert Botines had direct meeting with Manchester United today. Man Utd are approaching goalkeepers to explore options in case de Gea leaves — still waiting for final decision on that one.

Inter won’t sell Onana for less than €50m with add-ons.” After spending more than a decade at Old Trafford, David de Gea’s time at the club is seemingly coming towards an end as despite reaching the final week of his current contract, he hasn’t signed an extension yet.

The club wanted him to take a pay cut from his over 350k weekly to 200k, an offer that was rejected and De Gea is now set to move to Saudi Arabia, following in the steps of other veterans that have moved to the oil-rich state.

Erik ten Hag’s side have already started to explore goalkeeper options to replace De Gea and it appears they have firmly registered their interest in signing Onana in this transfer window.

After showcasing his talent during his time at Ajax Amsterdam, the Cameroonian opted to join Inter last summer. Upon signing for the Nerazzurri, the 27-year-old enjoyed a stellar debut campaign at the Giuseppe Meazza, helping his side finish second in the Champions League last season.

Ten Hag is said to be a ‘big fan’ of Onana and it seems the Dutch boss is keen on reuniting with his former colleague at Old Trafford having already worked with him during their time together at Ajax. Onana, standing at 6ft 2in tall, is a highly talented goalkeeper and would be an ideal option to play in Ten Hag’s possession-based system.

So, he would be an excellent acquisition for Man Utd if they eventually manage to lure him to Old Trafford in this transfer window. His price tag may prove to be the biggest stumbling block, given the fact that the Red Devils are still pursuing deals for Rasmus Hojlund and Mason Mount and neither of them is expected to come cheap either.

The Red Devils will accelerate the negotiations for Onana, and the next step will be presenting Inter with a concrete offer. The source believes that the Italian giants will receive the offer before the end of June.

With Spurs all but agreeing a fee for Empoli goalkeeper, Guglielmo Vicario, who was supposed to be Onana’s replacement at the Inter, the Nerazzurri may be less inclined towards selling the goalkeeper unless they receive an irresistible offer, (€50 million plus). Since he joined for free, any fee they receive for him would count as a capital gain in their financial books.

Meanwhile…

Manchester United forward, Mason Greenwood was spotted back in training ahead of a possible return to football. The 21-year-old was photographed in a training session with a private coach.

The session was reportedly held at a public sports centre and he worked on his close control and shooting in the 90 minute session. Greenwood remains suspended by Manchester United as they continue to conduct an internal investigation into him.

Charges of attempted rape, assault and coercive and controlling behaviour against him were dropped in February. Recent reports suggest that the club were considering sending him out on loan. The Crown Prosecution Service cited the withdrawal of key witnesses and new material coming to light.

He has been suspended since January 2022, following his initial arrest. Greenwood was named on the club’s retained list, but his future remains up in the air. He has been on full pay since his suspension and still has two years left on his contract. Clubs from Spain, Italy and Turkey were said to have already expressed an interest in a move. Prior to his suspension, Greenwood scored 35 goals in 129 games for the club.
