Lydia Bedford: Arsenal Appoint Former Leicester Coach In Assistant Capacity

Written by Oluwaseun Oyediji

Lydia Bedford has joined Arsenal Women as an assistant coach.

More Details

Arsenal has appointed former Leicester City manager Lydia Bedford as an assistant coach months after she was sacked by her former club – much to the surprise of Gunners boss Jonas Eidevall.

Bedford was made head coach of the Foxes in November 2021 and was initially rewarded with a new contract for steering them to safety last term, which should’ve kept her at the King Power until 2024.

However, after another difficult start to the campaign for Leicester, the club announced a reorganisation with Bedford subsequently replaced by their director of women’s football and former Everton boss Willie Kirk.

Leicester has continued to struggle for form in the Women’s Super League (WSL) even after Bedford was sacked and in danger of being relegated to the second-tier English Women’s Championship.

Now, Bedford joins the Gunners’ coaching staff as they continue their fight on all four fronts.

Arsenal are in FA Cup action this weekend against Chelsea, before they take on Emma Hayes ‘ side once again a week later in the Conti Cup final.

The bulk of the Arsenal squad returned from international duty on Friday as it prepares for a London derby in the fifth round of the Women’s FA Cup this weekend.

Speaking to the media ahead of Sunday’s clash, Jonas Eidevall was asked what he’s learnt from our previous battles with Chelsea and how we will nullify their in-form attacking threat.

“It’s the beauty of the game, you play against each other and you evolve,” said Eidevall in Friday’s press conference.

“Both teams have played different games since we last played and also evolved, so it’s never going to be exactly the same game, but there is an element in it that we have a lot of good views to use against them on Sunday.”
