Luis Enrique Calls For Improvement Despite Lyon Romp

Written By: Abidoye Babatunde

Paris Saint-Germain coach Luis Enrique called on his side to improve aspects of their game after Sunday’s 4-1 destruction of Lyon.

The reigning Ligue 1 Uber Eats champions produced their most accomplished performance of the season at the Groupama Stadium to move into second place on the table, two-points adrift of pacesetters Monaco.

Two Kylian Mbappé strikes and a goal apiece from Achraf Hakimi and Marco Asensio put Lyon to the sword, who pulled one back from the penalty spot through Corentin Tolisso.

The result handed PSG their biggest and most convincing win of the season and the Spaniard was pleased with the application of his players in a fixture that has often proved to be a banana skin for the Parisians.

“It’s a satisfaction, of course,” Luis Enrique said following his side’s victory. “It was an excellent match. What I liked was my team’s ambition from the first minute of the game. What I saw was more positive than negative but there are always things to improve.

“Lyon dealt with our pressure quite well in the beginning and there were some adjustments to be made but I am very happy.”

The former Barcelona and Spain boss is showing signs of instilling his philosophy on the capital club with an emphasis on possession and patient build-up from the back.

After scoring just once in their opening two games, PSG have now netted seven times in their last two fixtures against Lens and Lyon.

Whilst all may appear rosy at Parc des Princes, Luis Enrique is far from satisfied despite his side’s improving level and is demanding improvements in key aspects of PSG’s play when his players return from international duty.

“It’s still far from my personal requirements,” he said. “I would like even more possession, I would like us to be even more aware of the moments when we have to attack in depth or not.

“We have new players and I’ve discovered a different league. When we have an attack at the level of ours, we have immense potential in depth.  I’d like even more calm and control to choose the right time to attack in depth.”

PSG possess an embarrassment of riches in attack following the signing of France international Randal Kolo Muani in the closing stages of Friday’s transfer deadline.

A front line of Mbappé, Asensio, Gonçalo Ramos, Bradley Barcola and Ousmane Dembélé already had PSG supporters excited about the club’s prospects this season.

With Kolo Muani to call upon after the international break, the Spanish tactician is excited at the options at his disposal with a busy schedule of domestic and European football ahead.

“I still have Kolo Muani,” he added. “I’m very happy with the players I have in attack and I can’t wait to see the combinations I’m going to be able to make.

“I am very happy to have all these players. They want to be an important part of the club. I have a difficult task of choosing between them but frankly, this is something I will manage with pleasure.”
