‘It’s Useless Signing Him To A New Contract,’ Jerome Rothen Says Messi Doesn’t Deserve PSG Extension After Woeful UCL Performance

Written by Olaleye Oluwadamilola

Former PSG forward, Jerome Rothen has said that it’s useless to extend Lionel Messi’s contract at the French capital following his series of abysmal performance in the UEFA champions league accusing him of always disappearing in big and influential games after the Ligue 1 UCL exit in the hands of Bayern Munich in Germany on Wednesday.

More Details

The Qatar 2022 World Cup winner whose contract expires at the end of the season arrived on a free transfer from Spanish side Barcelona in the 2021 season and has gone on to win all the trophies available in France except the UEFA champions League with their latest exit coming in the round 16 against the Bavarians.

Although a contract extension is being discussed by both the players and the clubs but no final conclusion has been reached by both parties with the Argentine not convinced with the Paris projects according to multiple reports.

However, Jerome believes that the left footed forward should be allowed to leave as he has not been seemingly impressed with his performances since his arrival to the club as he blasts his lackadaisical attitude and absence in big crucial games.

Jerome Rothen even plans to no longer go to the Parc des Princes for Paris Saint-Germain matches if the Ligue 1 club signs Lionel Messi to a new contract deal.

PSG were beaten convincingly across both legs of their last-16 tie with Bayern, who cruised to a 2-0 victory in Wednesday night’s decider at the Allianz Arena after winning last month’s first leg by a single goal.

And after the defeat the 35-year-old received scathing criticism from PSG legend Jerome Rothen, who believes his below-par displays show he lacks ‘respect’ for the club – given how well he performed in Argentina’s World Cup-winning campaign.

“Messi, we don’t want it!,’ Rothen, who made 180 appearances in his own five-year spell at PSG, said in an explosive rant on French radio station RMC.

“He doesn’t want to get involved in this club! He says he’s “acclimatized” now, but what are you acclimatized to? You scored 18 goals or 16 assists this year against Angers and Clermont? But in the matches that matter, you disappear!”

“The joke is that we saw his matches at the World Cup, I saw his movements, how he invested himself. I don’t mind it, considering it’s the national team jersey, a separate thing, but hey, respect the club in the capital a little, which allows you to maintain a status and salary.”

‘Only PSG could give him that and, obviously, PSG fell at his feet because they thought Messi was going to make us win [the Champions League]. But he doesn’t win us anything.’

Rothen has made it clear in recent months that PSG should not extend Messi’s contract beyond the summer amid reports of a renewal being on the cards.

Last month he hit out at the former Barcelona star for not ‘investing in the project’ and prioritizing his own interests above the club’s.

“In terms of image and what it reflects, I can’t understand why Messi wants to extend the adventure here,” he said.

“He makes no effort to put the club ahead of him. He never thanks the fans, he lowers his head and goes to the dressing room.”

“Even when he celebrates goals and his name is chanted, he never has a gesture for the fans to thank them for their support.”

“He doesn’t want to invest in the project. Because of that, I don’t think it’s a good idea for it to continue.”
