Mexican women’s national team caused the major upset of the maiden CONCACAF Women’s Gold Cup after a 2-0 stunning win over record world champions, United States Women’s National Team (USWNT) in the last Group A match on Tuesday.

The Americans started the match the brightest and forced Barreras into a save at the Dignity Health Sports Park, in Carson, California.

Mexico capitalised on a mistake by the USWNT defence in clearing a call to Lizbeth Ovalle’s path.

Ovalle’s left-footed strike from the edge of the box hit the back of the net for the opener in the 38th minute.

Mexico hit the crossbar in the additional minutes of the first half as they searched for the second goal.

The team also forced American goalkeeper, Alyssa Naeher into a double save in the 85th minute.

Their efforts paid off in the additional minutes of the second half as Mayra Pelayo Bernal converted their second goal with a right-footed shot from outside the box.

The win extended the Mexican unbeaten run to 23 matches since their 1-0 loss to New Zealand in an international friendly match in 2022.

USWNT's eight-match unbeaten streak ended in the process which was their first loss since their Round of 16 ouster to Sweden at the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup.

Mexico qualified from Group A as group winners with seven points, a point ahead of the USA.


Argentina brightened their hope of making it to the next round of the Gold Cup albeit as one of the best third-placed finished teams after a 3-0 win over the Dominican Republic.

Dalila Ippolito opened the scoring for the South American side in the half-hour mark.

Celeste Dos Santos doubled the lead in the 76th minute before Maricel Pereyra made it 3-0 in the last moments of the game.

Argentina finished third in Group A with four points and will wait for the conclusion of the group stage to know their fate.
