Fantasy Premier League Preview: Week 9

Written by Patrick Echatah

Gameweek 9 in the Fantasy Premier League is quickly approaching after a lengthy two-week international break brought on by multiple postponements following the Queen’s passing. During the protracted break, a few things happened that will have an impact on many managers’ FPL teams.

In this FPL preview, we’ll go over some of the major talking points leading up to Gameweek 9 and highlight the major storylines that emerged from gameweek 8.

More Details

But first, a recap of the top performers from the previous round played before the brief hiatus. Tottenham attacker, Son Heung-min scored a hat-trick when his team defeated Leicester City 6-2 and he scored 19 FPL points for his efforts. Kevin De Bruyne grabbed 2 assists in Manchester City’s 3-0 win over Wolves, the Belgian got 10 FPL points for his effort.

Arsenal returned to winning ways by defeating Brentford 3-0 and their defender, William Saliba got 15 FPL points for his goal and clean sheet. Eric Dier also bagged a goal and for his efforts, he got 7 FPL points. Tottenham striker, Harry Kane also scored a goal, the Englishman got 10 points for his effort.

Manchester City goalie, Ederson kept a clean sheet against Wolves, the Brazilian got a total of 6 FPL points.

Top Picks For The Week…

Erling Haaland Manchester City will welcome Manchester United to the Etihad Stadium and it could present another chance for Erling Haaland to increase his goal tally and also give Kevin De Bruyne and Phil Foden the chance to pile up on their assist stats.

Mohamed Salah The 30-year-old is a surprise pick for gameweek 9 given his inconsistent form this season. Plenty of managers have moved away from the Liverpool superstar but it is the right time to bring the Egyptian winger back. If the Roberto De Zerbi era at Brighton is going to be as open and aggressive as we expect, Mohamed Salah could profit at Anfield on Saturday and start to look score goals once again.

James Maddison James Maddison is a top pick for gameweek 9 despite Leicester’s miserable start to the season. The former EPL champions have started the season quite miserably. Maddison is the only shinning light in attack with Brendan Rodgers’ side hitting double digits in goals and Maddison having a hand in four of them, scoring three.

Reece James Only the 1-1 draw in the Champions League match against RB Salzburg has been used as information about Graham Potter’s system at Chelsea due to the passing of Queen Elizabeth II and the international break. James thankfully switched back to his more natural right wing-back position in that game, and Potter’s history with James suggests that he will be used as a major attacking outlet with a fair chance of keeping a clean sheet on top. Selhurst Park should provide us with further information.

Philippe Coutinho Coutinho gave us a few highlights in Aston Villa’s 1-0 over Southampton with a more animated and expressive performance. The Brazilian should be considered for Villa’s upcoming games against the defenses of Leeds, Forest, and Fulham in three of their next four matches, in addition to their better performance. He’s a risky choice, for sure, but one that’s still worth keeping an eye on, even if you decide you want to see more.
