Costa Rica 2022: Colombia Stun Germany In Tournament Opener

Colombia had to rely on Mariana Munoz’s late goal to defeat three times Champions, Germany 0-1 in the opening match of the 2022 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup at the Estadio Alejandro Morera Soto, Alajuela on Wednesday.

Germany edged the Netherlands 1-0 in a preparatory match ahead of the opening match on July 19.

Colombia were initially scheduled to face Nigeria before its travel to Costa Rica but the game was postponed due to logistic reasons.

Irrespective of this, Colombia defeated Panama (4-1), Paraguay (4-0), and Venezuela (3-0) in preparation for this tournament.

The tune-up games cohesion paid off as Germany were unable to break down the Colombian defence.


Colombia won the game from the bench as Mariana Munoz who replaced Maria Reyes in the 72nd minute slotted a right-footed shot inside the box into the bottom left corner beyond Julia Kassen in the 87th minute.

Colombia will face Mexico in its next Group B game on August 14 while Germany will attempt to revive its tournament’s chances when it plays New Zealand on August 13.


New Zealand and Mexico settled for a 1-1 draw in the second Group B game on Wednesday.

Grace Wisnewski scored the first goal of the game for New Zealand in the 30th minute.

15 minutes later, Anette Vazquez equalised for Mexico to ensure that both sides started their 2022 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup campaign without a defeat.
