Spain won their first Women’s World Cup title on Sunday, stifling England in a 1-0 victory over the reigning European champions.
Olga Carmona opened the scoring in the 29th minute, and the Lionesses never fully recovered enough to find an equaliser.
While the win comes in Spain’s third appearance at the senior World Cup, they have been laying the groundwork.

World Cup wins at the U-17 and U-20 levels in 2018 and 2022 set the roster up for the right balance of experience and youth.
Spain players have also enjoyed success and built chemistry on their club teams, most notably at FC Barcelona and Real Madrid.
The win shined the spotlight back on federation dysfunction, unpopular manager Jorge Vilda, and those who chose not to participate in the tournament in protest.
