Much has been made about the struggle of English Premier League side, Liverpool, this season with many attributing it to the departure of Sadio Mane.

But the club think otherwise, as they’ve identified the midfield as the position that needs fresh legs and have identified a number of targets to sign.

Since the injury suffered by Thiago Alcantara in the first game of the season against Fulham, the Reds have struggled to find creativity in the midfield.

Brazilian midfielder, Arthur Melo, that was signed on loan from Juventus on the last day of the transfer window has struggled with fitness issues. Another Brazilian midfielder, Joao Gomes was recently linked with a move to Anfield and now, there’s a new name, Croatian midfielder, Lovro Majer.

Majer, described as the next ‘Luka Modric’, joined French side, Rennes from Dinamo Zagreb and has now been linked with a move to Liverpool, who passed up on the opportunity to sign the player before he joined Rennes.

The English club want to make a move for the player as early as January, but they face two major stumbling blocks, his huge price tag of €52 million and the interest from Barcelona, who have reportedly added the player to their list of possible replacement for the soon to be departed Sergio Busquets.

During the summer transfer window, Barcelona made a move for Athletic Bilbao defender, Inigo Martinez, but were put off by his release clause which the Basque club insisted on despite the fact that his contract was going to expire in 2023.

The Blaugrana had wanted the 31-years old as replacement for Gerard Pique, but the player ended up staying, with reports that they plan to sign the player for free next year.

But according to reports coming from Spain, Barcelona haven’t made any move yet to sign the player and it could be that they’re no longer interested or it could be a transfer strategy. Currently, they have plenty of options in the centre-back, hence it would make sense of they don’t sign him eventually.
