In a surprising opening game day of 2022/2023 Barclays English FA Women’s Super League (WSL), Aston Villa edged Manchester City 4-3 to start the season on an impressive note.

Host (Aston Villa took a two-goal lead in the first half as Alisha Lehmann and Rachel Daly scored two goals in the space of ten first-half minutes.

Khadija Shaw set up Laura Combs in the additional minutes of the first half to reduce the deficit for Manchester City.

In the second half, two goals in two minutes from Khadija Shaw and Laura Combs gave Manchester City a 2-3 lead but the comeback was later truncated.
